John Lewis

Baxter, KY

John C. Lewis of Harlan, Kentucky passed away on Monday, January 11, 2021 at Harlan Health and Rehabilitation Center. He was born December 14, 1932 on Coon Creek in Leslie County, Kentucky, son of Willard and Ethel Lewis.
John was a United States Army veteran, completing basic training at Fort Knox, KY in May 1953. During the Korean Conflict, he was stationed in Germany with the Armor Division and honorably discharged in May 1955.
John worked briefly at Chappell's Dairy, then at RC Cola Bottling Company as a route salesman and delivery man. He was known as "Red" to the many mom and pop grocery stores throughout the county. John was the manager of Mack's Supermarket in Baxter and later, Don's Super Saver in Harlan. After retiring, he enjoyed woodworking, gardening and continued for many years to greet customers and hand out buggies at Don's. John was a hard worker and an excellent provider for his family.
John was a faithful member of the Loyall Church of God where, for many years, he served as Sunday School Superintendent and lead the singing.
In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his wife, Ida Mae Lewis; brothers, Cova Lewis, Snowden Lewis, Willie Lewis, and twin brother Ray Lewis; and sisters, Bonnie Helton, Ethel Howard, and Sylvania Murphy.
Surviving are his children, Hilda Sue (Susie) Lewis and Rose Marie Cohelia;  grandchildren, Stephen Lewis, Jennifer Chasteen, Elizabeth Lewis and Katharine Cohelia; great-grandchildren, Jonathan Lewis, Taylor Brooks, Sidney Horton, Jayce Young, Justyce Young and Jonas Cohelia; great-great grandson, Avery Pete Farmer; sister, Sybil Forrester and sister-in-law, Annie Noe. Several nieces, nephews, and other relatives also survive to treasure the memory of their Uncle John.
A graveside service will be held 1:00 pm Thursday (Jan. 14) at the Resthaven Cemetery Chapel with Rev. Billy Owens officiating. Military Rites will be observed by the Harlan Honor Guard.
Pallbearers will be Darrell Cohelia, Stephen Lewis, Jon Lewis, Jimmy Chasteen, David Lewis, and Chris Lewis.
