Peggy Metcalf

November 23, 1936 — May 13, 2016

Peggy Lou Meadors Metcalf was born November 23, 1936, and departed this life May 13, 2016, at the Harlan Health and Rehabilitation Center in Harlan, Kentucky. Peggy was the older daughter of George C. and Pearl Hoskins Meadors, who preceded her in death.  She was also preceded in death by husband, Willard D. Metcalf, and an infant sister, Betty Lee;

Peggy was a 1953 graduate of Loyall High School, a 1955 graduate of Cumberland College, and a 1957 graduate of Eastern Kentucky University, where she earned a B. S. Degree in Elementary Education.  She began a thirty-one year teaching career at Loyall Elementary, Loyall, Kentucky, in 1957 and retired from Benham Elementary School, Benham, Kentucky, in 1987. She also taught in Castlewood Elementary School, Castlewood, Virginia.  As she never had children of her own, she always considered the many students throughout the years her children.

Peggy was a member of the First Baptist Church Loyall, where she was active until her sickness.   For the past several years, she was blessed by members of the Harlan Christian Church who visited her each Sunday afternoon to administer the Lord’s Supper. She had not been ambulatory for seven years.  Fortunately, Peggy was able to stay at home and managed her own care with the assistance of wonderful helpers and caregivers, Frank Sergent, Cathy Campbell, Jackie Blanton, Beverly Brewer, Sharon Grubbs, Sylvia Saylor, Kim Huff, Gail Allen, Carla McKendrick, and Jessica Thomas, who remained faithful until her death.

Peggy is survived by her sister, Dorothy Meadors Morris and husband Bob, a niece, Candace Morris Copes and husband Kevin, a nephew, Robb Morris and wife Nancy, and three great nephews and one great niece, Zachary Royce, Paul Robert Copes, Taylor Morris, and Alexandra Morris, all of whom she was extremely proud.  She is also survived by a very special friend, Carl Wilder.

The family will receive friends Monday, May 16, 2016, beginning at 12:00 p.m. of the Chapel of the Anderson and Laws Funeral Home In Harlan, Kentucky.  Funeral Services will follow at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Bob Whitter of First Baptist Church of Loyall officiating. Burial will be in the Resthaven Cemetery Pallbearers will be Bob Morris, Robb Morris, Kevin Copes, Zachary Copes, Paul Robert Copes, Taylor Morris, Clay McGlothin, and Kenneth Farley. Honorary pallbearers will be Glen Durham, Carl Wilder, and all the special friends of Loyall High School.
