Obituary

Jennifer Elaine McDaniels, age 52, of Harlan County, Kentucky, passed away after a brief illness, on February 23, 2026. Born on March 2, 1973, Jennifer was a lifelong resident of Harlan County and a proud daughter of Appalachia whose voice, work, and spirit reflected the strength and beauty of the mountains she loved so dearly.

Jennifer was an award winning Appalachian journalist, documentarian, educator, and accomplished photographer whose work captured the heart and heritage of Eastern Kentucky. She was deeply devoted to telling the stories of coal miners, preserving Harlan County history, and exploring the rich tapestry of mountain folklore.

A lifelong learner, Jennifer pursued her education with dedication and excellence. She was an English doctoral student and attended Morehead State University, University of Kentucky, Carson Newman College, and Cawood High School, class of 1991. Professionally, she was employed by the University of Kentucky and Blue Grass News Media. She also built a respected career as a freelance journalist and distinguished herself as a marketing and public relations specialist.

Jennifer was preceded in death by her beloved mother, Marquerite Jennette McDaniels; her father, Sterling McDaniels, her uncle Jerry Rowland Sr. and her cherished cousin, William “Buster” Rowland.

She leaves behind to cherish her memory her devoted sister, Theressa Rose (Darius Rose); her step-nieces and nephew, Angelique Rose (Beverly O’Brian) and Darius “Bunky” Rose Jr. (Rebekah Ambrose); her cousin Jerry Rowland Jr. (Margaret); numerous cousins and extended family; her treasured furry companion, Michelangelo “Micky” McDaniels, and her special friend, Justin Decker.

Jennifer was a tender, free-spirited soul whose kindness and devotion to others defined her life. A faithful Christian, she dedicated many years as a loving caregiver to her mother and grandmother, embodying compassion, and quiet strength. Her generous heart, sharp intellect, creative spirit, and deep love for Appalachian roots will be remembered by all who knew her.

Jennifer’s legacy extends far beyond her work. In becoming an organ donor she gave the ultimate gift of life, a lasting reflection of her compassion and generosity .

Her legacy lives on in the stories she preserved, the images she captured, and the lives she touched. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

Visitation will be held on Friday February 27 from 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm at Anderson Laws & Jones Funeral Home.
