George Kenneth (Ken) Bowling, 71 of Baxter passed away on Wednesday, January 29, 2020 at his home following a courageous battle with cancer.
Ken was born June 13, 1948 in Harlan to the late George and Mabel Smith Bowling. He was the owner/operator of Ken Bowling Builders and Harlan Lumber & Hardware, having built hundreds of houses throughout Harlan Co since the early 70’s. He was a proud supporter of Harlan Independent School District having helped with the elementary school playground and football program, on Friday nights you could always see him in his familiar spot on the top bleacher at Green Dragon Field.
Ken was a very simple and humble man, he enjoyed sitting in the swing or around the fire pit, walking his dogs along the beach or picking up seashells, tending to his garden or when not working catching a few fish. He was always willing to help anyone he could, wanted no recognition and always simply put himself last. To know Ken you knew he loved to fuss, loved to talk and was good at both. A very special man who will be missed by so many especially the family he loved so dearly.
Besides his parents he was preceded in death by his brothers, James “Ossie” Fannon and Lee Bowling; his sister, Mollie Fannon.
He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 48 years, Phyllis Ellis Bowling; his children, whom he loved dearly, Cindy Bowling Wilson and Kenny (Nancy) Bowling; he was Papa to the lights of his life, Shawn Michael Wilson, Madison Bowling, Kenny Bowling, and Emily Bowling; his fur babies, Sam and Sadie who brought much joy to him.
Also surviving are “The Brothers”, Micky (Linda) Bowling, Roger (Patty) Bowling, Danny (Edie) Bowling; sister in laws for whom he considered his sisters, Sharon (Clarence) Epperson, Marsha (William) Epperson, Pat (Jack) McClung, and Monie Ellis; he leaves a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends to mourn his passing.
The Bowling family will receive friends from 5:00 pm – 8:00 pm Friday (Jan. 31) at the Anderson-Laws & Jones Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 am on Saturday (Feb. 1) from the Chapel (that Ken proudly built) of Anderson-Laws & Jones Funeral Home.
Burial will follow in the Resthaven Cemetery at Keith, KY.
