George Burl Saylor

George Burl Saylor 86 of Wallins passed away March 22, 2017.  Burl was born July 19th 1930 to James and Della Saylor.   He was preceded in death by his siblings, Naomi Walden Ayers, Herman Saylor, and Homer Saylor; The love of his life, Tommie in 2005, they shared 55 happy years  together; his son Gary Randall Saylor in 2010.

Burl Saylor was a familiar sight in Wallins for many years as an insurance agent for Life and Casualty. He enjoyed his job and never met a stranger.  He worked for Modern Bakery previous to that. In the early years he and Tommie tried working in Detroit, but Harlan Co was always home for them.   Together, they were involved in the community in many ways.  They were original members of the Wallins Rescue Squad as well as active in the early years of the Wallins Booster Club. Burl was also involved in local politics for many years and was always up for discussing the issues. He was a Mason, Kentucky Colonel and a member of the American Legion.   He was first and foremost an avid Kentucky Wildcats fan.

During WWII, Burl wanting to follow in the footsteps of his brothers in serving his country, enlisted in both the Army and Navy.  He was honorably discharged for being underage.   He went on to graduate from Wallins High School and loved to tell stories of playing football for the Wallins Purple Devils.

Those left to cherish his memory are daughters Jean (J.B.) Smith Of Zeeland, Mi.,  Jeri Lynn (Tom) Brown of Versailles, Ky.;  Grandchildren: James (Kristen) Smith Novi, Mi., Jody (Heather) Smith, Versailles, Ky.,  Randi Rouse and fiancé  Bill Harrison of Lexington, Ky.; Great granddaughters: Jordan Smith, Hannah Smith of Michigan; Great grandsons:  Billy Ray and Artorius Harrison of Lexington, Ky.; surviving also special nephew, Jerry (Joan) Walden, who was like a brother to him.  Brother in law, Charles Taylor, and several nieces and nephews. Special thanks to his son-in-law, Tom Brown, for taking such special care of him these past few months and always being able to coax a laugh out of him.

Visitation will be 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm Saturday (March25) 2017 at the Anderson-Laws & Jones Funeral Home.

Funeral services will follow at 3:00 pm in the chapel of Anderson-Laws & Jones Funeral Home with J.B. Smith officiating and Eulogy by Jerry Walden.

He will be laid to rest beside of his beloved wife, Tommie at the Park Howard Cemetery in Wallins, KY. Military Rites will be observed by the Harlan Honor Guard.
