George D. Howard Jr. of Baxter, Kentucky passed away Monday, June 19, 2023, at the age of 83.
George was born November 26, 1939, in Baxter, KY to the late George D. Howard Sr. and Rosa Lea Mowery Howard. After graduating from Harlan High School, he went on to graduate from Kentucky Business College. George joined the United States Air Force serving as a Medical Administrative Specialist. After leaving the Air Force, George later felt called to continue Military Service and joined the United States Army Reserve where he served Honorably as a Long Range Reconnaissance Scout and served in Operation Desert Storm. He was a 61 year member of Howard Lodge 819 F & AM; where he was a Past Master, he also was a member of the Oleika Shriner. He worked at Harlan Retreading Company for many years until he retired.
George is survived by his wife of 48 years, Rose Marie. Their only daughter, Ashley Brooke Lemar, and three grandchildren whom he adored; Addison, Ryder, and Isabella Lemar all of Harlan. Two sisters, Delores Hickey of Harlan, and Norma Howard of Dallas, GA as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents, George D. Howard Sr. and Rosa Lea Howard; brothers Ralph Howard, John Dudley Howard, and Allan Howard; sisters Inez Howard Rowlett and Peggy Howard Richardson.
Visitation will be held 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm Wednesday (June 21) at Anderson Laws and Jones Funeral Home, In keeping with George's wishes, a brief closing service will follow at 8:00 pm by the Rev. Charles Morris.
Graveside service will be held at 1:00 pm Thursday at the Kentucky Veterans Cemetery South East in Hyden, KY, with Military Rites being observed by the Harlan Honor Guard.
