Darrell “Big Darrell” Smith I, age 73 of Cawood, passed away peacefully on Oct 7th, 2026, at the Johnson City Medical Center in Johnson City, TN, following a long illness.

 Darrell was born April 12th, 1953, in the coal camps of Smith Ky, to Byrd and Meddie Saylor Smith. Following in the footsteps of his father, grandfather, and siblings, Darrell became a coal miner at an early age and worked underground for many years. He was a third-generation coal miner and was immensely proud of his heritage. He spoke often of his time in the mines and eventually passed his love for Harlan County coal to two more generations after him.

 Darrell was an active man who rarely sit still. He was a lover of road trips, classic cars, and motorcycles. Often times, you could find him buying, selling, or trading cars, riding motorcycles, or cruising the backroads. In his younger years he enjoyed classic car restoration and won many trophies for his talent.

 Darrell was preceded in death by his parents, his oldest son, Big Wes Smith, and seven siblings.

 Darrell is survived by his daughter, Aggie Smith (Tracy), his son Darrell Smith (Misty), Sister Earlene Johnson, and a special friend Kay Bargo,

 He also leaves behind seven grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren and a host of family and friends, whom he loved dearly.

 Visitation will be held at Anderson-Laws & Jones  Funeral Home on Tuesday Oct 13th from 12:00 pm  - 2:00 pm.

 Funeral services will follow at 2:00 pm, in the Chapel of the Anderson-Laws & Jones Funeral Home with Pastor Sean Daniels officiating,

 Burial will follow in the Browning-Smith Cemetery at Cawood, KY with Family and Friends serving as Pallbearers.
