Daniel Ball Pope, Sr., died peacefully on March 30, 2026, in the presence of his family. He was born on September 7, 1926, in Harlan, Kentucky. A faithful Christian, he sought to honor Jesus Christ in every aspect of his life and was distinguished by steadfast devotion to his family, his community, and a lifelong commitment to service. He loved his wife and family deeply and led them with steadfast care, generosity, and devotion.

During World War II, Mr. Pope served honorably in the United States Army and was stationed on Guam and Saipan. Following his military service, he attended the University of Kentucky and later earned a Master of Arts in Special Education, with an emphasis in Deaf Education, from San Fernando Valley State College in Northridge, California. He subsequently entered public service, serving one six-year term as Circuit Court Clerk of Harlan County, Kentucky. He later devoted his professional career to assisting others as a Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor and, for many years, served as an adjunct instructor at the University of South Florida.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry Harrison Pope and Mary Kila Ball Pope; his brothers, Henry Pope and Charles Pope, M.D.; and his son-in-law, George Lucas. He is survived by his wife of 75 years, Eleanor Ruth Alice Buttermore Pope; his children, Dr. Daniel Ball Pope, Jr. (Becky), Rev. Dr. John Nelson Pope (Joy), and Eleanor Elaine Lucas; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; his sister, Katherine Pope White; and his brother, James Glenn Pope (Helen); and an abundance of nephews and nieces.

Mr. Pope was known for strength of character, kindness, and intellectual curiosity. He enjoyed reading, genealogy, jigsaw puzzles, and working outdoors. His faith in Jesus Christ informed every aspect of his life. He was diligent in reading and studying the Scriptures and the writings of theologians, particularly Martin Luther. He served as a Presbyterian Elder at First Presbyterian Church in Bradenton, Florida, and at the time of his death was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Parrish, Florida. He taught his children the importance of service to God and others, and exemplified that commitment through lifelong care for family, neighbors, friends, and those he served professionally.

All who knew him will remember him warmly and gratefully.

Funeral services will be 10:00 am Saturday, July 25, 2026 at First Presbyterian Church of Harlan, 306 E. Clover Street, Harlan, KY 40831. A graveside service will follow at 11;00 am at the Resthaven Cemetery at Keith, KY with military rites being observed by the Harlan Honor Guard.
