Billie Jean Cawood, 91 of Harlan passed away Sunday morning of June 26, 2022 at the home of her daughter in Richmond, KY.
Mrs. Cawood was born February 24, 1931 in Estill Co., KY to the late Clyde and Emma Bailey Dixon. She was a graduate of Irvin High School. She earned her B.S. Degree at EKU in 1955 and she then came to Harlan Co, where she and her husband Billy Joe taught school with the Harlan County Board of Education. Later in her career she received her Masters Degree at UK and Rank I from EKU. She left Harlan Co and taught in Dade Co., FL only to return to Harlan Co. where she worked in the Central Office as Supervisor of Instruction for many years. After retiring with 37 years of experience, she was asked to stay on working with many other programs within the county school district, she also worked with student teachers for Lincoln Memorial University for a couple of years.
Over the years Mrs. Cawood belonged to several educational associations, committees, the Harlan Woman's Club, but her proudest membership was at the Harlan United Methodist Church. Over the years she served as President of the Woman's Group, Sunday School Teacher, secretary of the Church board, and enjoyed working in the kitchen, most of all she loved telling you that "she loved the Lord"
Besides her parents she was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Billy Joe Cawood; infant brother, Larry Dixon; sister, Sue Gross.
She is survived by her loving children, Stephanna Cawood and Peter Figgis of Richmond, James C. "J.C." Cawood and Debbie of Harlan; grandchildren, Ashley Cawood and Jamie Cawood; 7 great grandchildren; 1 brother, Donnie Dixon of Irvine, KY; she leaves a host of nieces, nephew, other relatives and friends to mourn her passing.
Visitation will be 12:30 - 2:00 pm Thursday (June 30) at the Anderson-Laws & Jones Funeral Home, 114 South 3rd Street, Harlan, KY 40831
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 pm in the Chapel of the Anderson-Laws & Jones Funeral Home with Rev. Kyle Burnette officiating. Music will be provided by Mr. Jeff Lunsford.
She will be laid to rest beside of her husband at the Cawood Family Cemetery in Cawood, KY. with family and friends serving as Pallbearers.
The family suggest memorials be made to the Harlan United Methodist Church, PO Box 261, Harlan, KY 40831 in memory of Billie Jean Cawood.
