Alice Hurst

March 18, 1936 — August 3, 2021

Harlan, Ky

Alice Gibbs Hurst, 85 of Harlan passed away on Tuesday morning of August 3, 2021 at the Harlan ARH after spending her final days surrounded by the family she loved with all her heart.
Alice was born March 18, 1936 in Kenvir, KY. She graduated from Rothenberg High School in Cincinnati, OH in 1952. In 1954 she married Wako K. Hurst. She was born at home in the middle of a blizzard, her father waded through snow up to your hips to fetch the doctor.  The youngest of 6 children she was born to William and Cora Gibbs. Later when they moved to Cincinnati, she enjoyed watching the Reds practice, going to the movies, theater, and spending time at the girls club. She was a girl scout and member of the girl guard at school.
On a double date set up by her best friend, Lydia, she met the love of her life, Wako. They married the day after her 18th birthday, celebrating 58 happy years together.
Alice worked briefly as a telephone operator then as a server at a lunch counter. Her favorite job was as a beautician along side her lifelong best friends, Billie Easley and Clara Sutton. Enjoying over thirty years of friendship with her ladies. She missed everyone of them.
There was nothing she loved more than spending time with her family, gathering with extended family on holidays, Sundays, and camping trips. Looking forward to Sunday dinners after church with her children, and grandchildren and so many happy vacations together.
She devoted much of her time and energy as a caregiver to family members. She was very active member of the Harlan Baptist Church, serving as Sunday School Teacher,  and with the WMU. Many years she was always proud to help with the Lords Living Last Supper performance. Generous and compassionate, she believed it was better to give than to receive. A life made of beautiful kind deeds.
Besides her parents, and loving husband, Alice was preceded in death by her brothers William Gibbs and George Gibbs; sisters, Dorothy Gilliam, Bertha Jennings, Isabell Edwards, and Hazel Cole.
She is survived by 2 devoted daughters, Karen (Jonathan) Grills and Donna (Rick) Morris; grandchildren, Emily (Richie) Krieger, Andrew Grills, Cameron Morris, Nicholas Morris; great grandchildren, Lila and Reid Krieger.
